As IMF–World Bank meets in Bangkok:
Over 200 organizations and movements launch International Peoples’ Assembly, calls for debt cancellation and overhaul of global financial architecture
BANGKOK (12 October 2026) — As finance ministers, central bankers, and delegates gather in Bangkok for the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank (12–18 October), over 200 civil society organizations, trade unions, and debt and climate justice coalitions from across Asia, Africa, and Latin America have convened to launch the International Peoples’ Assembly. Meeting under the theme “From Debt and Domination to Justice and Liberation,” the Assembly rejects incremental reform, demanding a complete overhaul of an international financial architecture that traps developing nations in cycles of debt that fuels the climate crisis.
The Assembly took place on 12-13 October at Ambassador Hotel Bangkok, highlighting the shared struggles of peoples impacted by the consequences of IMF-WB policies. The participants also held a Global Day of Action on 16 October. On that day, more than one thousand individuals from trade unions, social movements, and civil society organisations held a People Rising for Justice and Liberation march in Bangkok. Coordinated marches and demonstrations also took place in more than 60 cities in over 30 countries across the world.

We stand on the fault lines of a breaking system…
The global economic and financial architecture led by multilateral institutions—anchored by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank—continues to prioritize corporate profit over human life and planetary survival. Through predatory debt traps, forced austerity, privatization of essential public services, and fossil fuel financing, multilateral institutions enforce neoliberal policies that weaken Global South economies, destroy fragile ecosystems, and widen the gap between billionaires and the working majority.
…and we are rising to transform it.
As the IMF and World Bank Group hold their Annual Meetings from October 12–18 in Bangkok, Thailand, we are rising to demand a structural overhaul of international finance and global trade. We call for immediate, unconditional debt cancellation, climate reparations, an end to forced privatization, democratic UN tax governance, and a just energy transition.
From Bangkok to the world, peoples’ movements are standing united to denounce eight decades of structural economic violence and demand systemic transformation. As part of an arc of globally coordinated mobilizations, civil society and grassroots movements across Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and North America are coming together. Following the UN General Assembly actions in September, this Global Week of Action builds toward the October 14 Global Day of Action, laying the groundwork for upcoming mobilizations during COP31 and the G20 Summit in November.
Together, we build the collective power to dismantle predatory economic systems and reclaim our future from those who exploit our communities and planet.
