We stand on the fault lines of a breaking system…

The global economic and financial architecture led by multilateral institutions—anchored by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank—continues to prioritize corporate profit over human life and planetary survival. Through predatory debt traps, forced austerity, privatization of essential public services, and fossil fuel financing, multilateral institutions enforce neoliberal policies that weaken Global South economies, destroy fragile ecosystems, and widen the gap between billionaires and the working majority.

…and we are rising to transform it.

As the IMF and World Bank Group hold their Annual Meetings from October 12–18 in Bangkok, Thailand, we are rising to demand a structural overhaul of international finance and global trade. We call for immediate, unconditional debt cancellation, climate reparations, an end to forced privatization, democratic UN tax governance, and a just energy transition.

From Bangkok to the world, peoples’ movements are standing united to denounce eight decades of structural economic violence and demand systemic transformation. As part of an arc of globally coordinated mobilizations, civil society and grassroots movements across Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and North America are coming together. Following the UN General Assembly actions in September, this Global Week of Action builds toward the October 14 Global Day of Action, laying the groundwork for upcoming mobilizations during COP31 and the G20 Summit in November.

Help lead the discussions and exchanges! This will be held at the Ambassador Hotel, in Bangkok. The registration deadline is September 28. Click on the button to register.

Climate Defenders Demand Accountability

Description: Money poured into energy, extractives, and infrastructure projects harm people and the planet, so it stands to reason that holding investors accountable is key to climate protection. Even when investors set out to advance climate goals, ignoring local communities can result in further harm to the environment. You are welcome to join this half-day event to hear from environmental defenders and their allies demanding accountability from investors for their role in the climate crisis. Their stories will reveal barriers to preventing, mitigating, and remediating environmental harm, highlight accountability pathways and strategies that climate defenders globally can use, and share policy recommendations to make sure investments truly protect people and the planet.

Rising Cost of Development Finance: How the Bretton Woods Institutions Can Deliver Development

Description: The global financial architecture continues to constrain sustainable development and the just energy transition through unequal access to affordable finance, inadequate crisis response mechanisms, and outdated governance structures. Debt and climate vulnerabilities continue to deepen as developing countries face prohibitively high borrowing costs and shrinking fiscal space. Under these conditions, demands for reform of the Bretton Woods Institutions have become increasingly urgent. This session will examine how the World Bank, IMF and other multilateral development banks can address structural barriers through reforms to global governance and sovereign debt architecture. The session will reflect on new research and explore practical pathways for reducing the cost of capital, easing of debt distress and expanding fiscal space to support a just energy transition while advancing a more equitable and development-oriented global financial architecture.
